Coraline is a 2009 American stop-motion animated fantasy horror film written and directed by Henry Selick, based on the 2002 novella by Neil Gaiman. The film tells the story of a young girl Coraline Jones (voiced by Dakota Fanning) discovering an idealized alternate universe behind a secret door in her new home, unaware that it contains something dark and sinister. In Coraline, the button eyes sewn on by the Beldam (Other Mother) are used to steal the souls and life force of children, acting as a contract of ownership to trap them in the Other World. They symbolize total control, the loss of self, and serve as an "energy saver" for the Beldam's magic. The Beldam devours the souls of the children after sewing the buttons on, keeping them trapped in her realm.
